How to Declutter Before Moving: A Simple Guide to a Lighter Move
Moving to a new home is an exciting new beginning, but getting there can feel overwhelming. Between organizing, packing, coordinating schedules, and preparing your family, there is a lot to manage before moving day.
At BluBox Movers, we’ve seen firsthand how much easier a move can be when you take the time to declutter before packing. We provide professional moving services throughout Central Florida.
Because moving isn’t just about putting everything into boxes.
It’s about deciding what deserves to come with you into your next chapter.
More than moving boxes. We help people move forward.
Why Decluttering Before a Move Makes Moving Easier
When you move everything you own without sorting through it first, you may spend time, energy, and money transporting things you no longer use.
We recently helped a client in Winter Garden who chose to keep everything, even after we recommended taking some time to declutter before the move. We completely understand that belongings can have sentimental value, and ultimately, every homeowner has to decide what is worth keeping.
But in this case, the decision came with a significant financial impact. The additional costs associated with the move ended up exceeding $1,000.
That experience is a good reminder that decluttering isn’t about getting rid of things just for the sake of having less. It’s about making intentional decisions before moving day and understanding how the amount of belongings you take with you can affect the time, space, labor, and overall cost of a move.
Decluttering before moving can help you:
- Pack fewer boxes
- Spend less time packing and unpacking
- Make better use of your moving space
- Stay more organized throughout the move
- Start fresh in your new home
- Potentially reduce moving-related costs
At BluBox Movers, we respect that every home and every belonging has a story. Our job is not to tell you what to keep — it’s to help you understand your options so you can make the best decision for your move.
Whether you’re preparing for a move in Winter Garden, Celebration, Clermont, or another Central Florida community, taking time to simplify your belongings can make a big difference.
Step 1: Start With What You Know You Don't Need
Don’t begin with the difficult decisions.
Start with things that are clearly broken, damaged, outdated, or unusable.
Look for:
- Torn or heavily damaged clothing
- Broken appliances
- Damaged kitchenware
- Worn-out shoes
- Items missing important pieces
- Products that have expired
- Things you’ve been keeping “just in case”
Getting these items out of the way first gives you a quick sense of progress.
Step 2: Decide What Comes With You
Now look at the things that are still usable but haven’t been used in a long time.
Ask yourself:
Have I used this recently?
Would I buy this again today?
Does this still fit my lifestyle?
Will I have a place for it in my new home?
If the answer is no, consider donating, selling, recycling, or responsibly disposing of the item.
You don’t have to get rid of something simply because you haven’t used it recently. Some things have sentimental value, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t to create an empty home — it’s to be intentional about what you choose to bring into your next chapter.
A move is more than changing addresses. It’s an opportunity to close one chapter and make room for what comes next. Let go of what no longer serves your life, and give yourself space for the new memories, experiences, and possibilities ahead.
Step 3: Declutter One Room at a Time
Trying to declutter your entire house in one day can quickly become overwhelming.
Instead, work through your home one area at a time.
Closets
Set aside clothing, shoes, and accessories you no longer wear.
Kitchen
Look for duplicate utensils, appliances you rarely use, and items taking up valuable cabinet space.
Children’s Rooms
Sort through clothing, toys, books, and items your children have outgrown.
Garage & Storage
These areas often contain things that haven’t been used in years. If you forgot you had it, ask yourself whether it really needs to make the move.
Home Office
Sort through old paperwork, unused supplies, and equipment that no longer serves a purpose.
Step 4: Separate Your Belongings Into Four Groups
A simple system can make decisions much easier:
KEEP — Coming with you.
DONATE — Still useful, but no longer needed by your household.
SELL — Valuable items you no longer want.
DISCARD — Broken, damaged, or unusable items.
Keep these groups physically separate whenever possible. This prevents items you’ve already decided to donate or sell from accidentally ending up back in your moving boxes.
Step 5: Pack What You're Keeping With a Plan
Once you’ve finished decluttering, packing becomes much more manageable.
Group similar items together and label every box clearly.
For example:
KITCHEN — EVERYDAY ITEMS
MASTER BEDROOM — CLOTHING
BATHROOM — ESSENTIALS
CHILD’S ROOM — TOYS
Also prepare an Essentials Box with the things you’ll need immediately after arriving.
Consider including:
- Toiletries
- Medications
- Phone chargers
- Important documents
- Basic cleaning supplies
- A change of clothes
- Snacks and drinks
- Basic kitchen items
You’ll be glad you did when you arrive at your new home.
If you prefer to have the packing handled professionally, professional packing services can help protect and organize your belongings before moving day.
Step 6: Think About Your New Home Before Moving Day
Decluttering isn’t only about getting rid of things.
It’s also an opportunity to think about how you want your new home to feel.
Where will your furniture go?
Which items do you actually want displayed?
Do you need every piece of furniture you’re currently using?
Would your new home be easier to organize if you brought less?
Making these decisions before moving day can save time and make unpacking much easier.
A Real Moving Lesson from Celebration
One of our recent moves in Celebration, Florida was a great example of why thoughtful planning matters.
The homeowner was moving into her new home, but she wasn’t there to manage the move herself. Her two daughters and son-in-law took care of everything — and they did an incredible job.
They were organized from the very beginning. As we brought each piece into the house, they knew exactly where it belonged. There was a plan for every room, and everything seemed to fit perfectly.
But even with that level of preparation, moving day brought a few unexpected decisions.
Once the furniture was inside the new home and they could see the space in real life, they realized that one or two pieces simply didn’t make sense in the new layout. And what’s interesting is that they actually had plenty of space.
The issue wasn’t that the furniture physically couldn’t fit. It was that, once everything was in place, those pieces no longer worked for the way they wanted to use the home.
That’s one of the things we often see during a move: what makes sense in one home doesn’t always make sense in the next.
Sometimes you need to see your belongings in the new space before you know what truly belongs there.
That’s why decluttering before a move isn’t about getting rid of everything. It’s about making thoughtful decisions about what deserves to move forward with you.
And sometimes, even after you’ve packed and moved, you’re still allowed to make a different decision.
A new home is a new chapter. Your belongings should support the life you’re building there.
When You Need Help, You Don't Have to Do It Alone
Decluttering, packing, moving, and settling into a new home can be a lot to handle.
That’s where professional moving support can make a difference.
At BluBox Movers, we help homeowners, renters, families, seniors, and businesses with professional moving services throughout Central Florida.

A Lighter Move Starts Before Moving Day
You don’t have to declutter your entire life.
Start with one closet.
Then one room.
Then one box.
Every item you decide not to move is one less thing to pack, carry, transport, unpack, and organize later.
Sometimes, making your move easier starts with simply taking less with you.
More than moving boxes. We help people move forward.
